Jazz Shoes – Fashion or Function

Dancing is all about looking great and when buying a new pair of jazz shoes you’ll want to make sure that they match the rest of your outfit. They come in a wide variety of styles such as high-rise, low-rise, slip on, lace ups, split sole, full sole, mesh insoles, PVC upper, leather upper and the list really does go on. They’re also available in a range of different colours which are great if you want your shoes to grab people’s attention.

Whichever the style and colour of your shoes, it is very important for the footwear chosen by the dancer to be highly comfortable for the dancer. This will ensure that your shoes both look great and also enable you to give your best possible performance to make you look great too! Most jazz shoes are manufactured from very soft leather which is very lightweight and highly flexible so as to allow the required movement of your foot. It also enables the shoe to mould to the shape of your foot over time offering maximum comfort.

If you’re a beginner to jazz dancing, then the emphasis will be even more on function than fashion, and it’s always best to speak to your dance teacher for advice on which shoes to purhcase. However, most beginners learn to dance with a full sole shoe as this offers maximum support. You will then progress to a split sole when you become more experienced to allow more flexibility of the foot.
